The doctoral programme "Problem-oriented Sport Science" gets a makeover

The doctoral programme "Problem-oriented Sport Science" is presenting itself with a new framework programme for the funding period 2025–2028. In addition to a smaller summer school with a stronger focus on problem orientation, this includes monodisciplinary satellite workshops, which will be held annually by each department in future.

The first summer school of the new funding period took place in Weggis from the 23rd to the 25th of June 2025. The focus was on presentations by doctoral students, who discussed and critically reflected on their research projects in interdisciplinary groups. Three scientific impulses shaped the programme: Prof. Dr. Mirko Schmidt (University of Bern) spoke on the importance of problem-oriented sport science, Prof. Dr. Gorden Sudeck (University of Tübingen) on individualised promotion of physical activity, and a panel discussion brought different perspectives on sports science into dialogue. In addition to the intensive work phases, joint activities provided opportunities for informal exchange and networking.

In 2025, the satellite workshops covered the following topics: In the department of Sport Pedagogy, "Bridging the gap between cognitive load theory and exercise and cognition research2 with Dr. Caterina Pesce and Prof. Fred Paas, while the department of Sport Sociology and Management participated in a cooperative workshop with the PH Schwäbisch Gmünd and the TU Chemnitz. The department of Sport Psychology and Research Methods organised an online workshop on "Qualitative research methods" led by Dr. Michael McDougall. Together with Dr. Tom Arthur and Dr. David Harris, the department of Movement and Exercise Science discussed "Dealing with motor uncertainties". The department of Health Science addressed "Physical activity policy implementation: Measures, methods and means of evaluation" with Prof. Dr. Catherine Woods.

The summer school and the satellites represent an excellent start to the new funding period. They sharpen the academic profile of the programme and impressively confirm the relevance of problem-oriented sport science!
